Paint it black

A long time has passed since my last post. Some duties occured with uni like exams and stuff that held me from painting.

Current assigment is a commission that I have taken some time ago. It's a regiment of Black Numenorean Warriors and Morgul Knights, led by Witch - King and Mouth of Sauron.

Now it's only a matter of great deal of painting black robes...meh I hate it.

Also I'd like to state that in face of lots of questions concerning the possibility of Viruk and me doing commission work - if you want to have your minis painted by one of us, please contact us. It's just a matter of agreeing on the terms of a deal.

LOST no more

I know it's not hobby-related but still a thought that I'd write a few words of comment to the last episode of this TV series. I've been watching it from the very beginning. The first season was... great. Well written by the producers, intriguing, mysterious, and surprising. The final cliffhanger(light coming from the hatch) was epic. The second season was also quite good but there were so many twists to the plot that it became difficult to understand it all. Still, it wasn't bad and for me it could have ended there.

And the remaining four seasons - well, they were some good episodes mixed with some that were simply terrible. If the first two seasons hadn't been so successful the rest probably wouldn't even have been created. Anyway, I kept on watching it out of habit, hoping that the ending might somehow make up for the time spent as well as the time wasted on watching all of the six seasons. Unfortunately, it turned out to be just another disappointment. The whole quasi-religious thing they came up with is just a 'universal' explanation that is a convenient way of saying "we knew from the beginning how it would end". Too bad that in light of it everything that happened on the island; time travel, Dharma initiative experiments, conflicts with 'the Others', supernatural powers, the smoke thingy, polar bears, etc. all mean nothing.

I think that this clip nicely summarises LOST, a TV series that could have been great but ended up being overly complicated and way too long (though I'm sure that the profits were good until the very end). Spoilers abound so don't watch it if you haven't seen the final episode yet.

Also, if you enjoyed or at least used to enjoy watching LOST, I recommend checking out Jimmy Kimmel's Aloha to LOST special - nice to see most of the cast in the studio.

Picture this

It's been a while since I last posted. I've been quite busy with stuff at the uni. Now that I'm not too far from graduating I dedicate much more of my time to studying and so far it look like 'the end is near'.

Yesterday we (me and my fiancée) bought a new digital camera - SONY DSC HX1. It's a fairly advanced (if digital cameras can be described in this way) as there are plenty of options that can be adjusted manually. I haven't had time to fiddle with it yet but the first pics taken using the automatic settings are promising. It's a big change as my old camera has been in use for about five years (Konica Minolta DiMAGE X60) and even though it did take decent pictures, I personally felt that in particular the pics of the minis I paint were of poor quality and they did not show the quality of painting well enough. Anyway, from now on the quality of pics uploaded here should be noticeably better :)

I'm currently working on another WH40K commission - two more Ogryns (an early WIP pic can be seen below) and a Daemon Prince. The latter has not yet arrived but I will probably get it tomorrow. The commissioner asked for a conversion and I will pimp it with wings. I think i'm going to enjoy working on this one, pics of the WIP will definitely be posted here. Until then, take care.

A family picture

Here they are, a pic of the four ogryns:

And some close-ups.

I had a blast painting these minis. I tried a new technique while working of the dirt on the armour - I used the foam with which the minis are packed in a blister pack. A piece of it was dipped into the paint and after removing most of the paint, I basically scratched the armour with it. It's similar to drybrush, the main difference is that it leaves more irregular patches of paint. I worked inside-out with to make sure that the edges look dirty enough. As usually, the pictures failed to capture all the details adequately but well, there's nothing I can do about it at this point.

And to finish off this post, here's a nice family picture:

Angel, Bloody Angel

Finally it's time to present effect on latest efforts with painting BA Sanguinary Guard.

As I predicted they are pretty funny minis to paint, I enjoyed it very much. Well maybe besides the wings which are kinda' pain. I'm scared to think how they will 'help' with painting standard bearer.

Anyway here are pictures of complete mini.

You can find it both on:

Color me once

Just a quick update today. I've been working on the ogryns recently. As I had expected - painting them is time consuming. Working on large surfaces requires a looot of dilluted paint to get the colours right. Anyway, here's how they look at this stage.

There's still a lot of work to be done on the armour, weapons and some other details. I've been quite busy with writing my MA thesis recently but next week I should have more time and will probably finish them.

And to end this post in the mood resembling what I see through the window (I don't recall last time when it was so rainy and gloomy in May) I'll leave you with this cool song from OST to one of my favourite movies.
