New MAS bases, first impressions

The original Kickstarter campaign, launched jointly by Micro Art Studio and Coolminiornot, was launched in September 2014 and February 2015 was the estimated shipping date. Well, as often happens with crowdfunding, it was delayed. I'd almost completely forgotten about it so I was a bit surprised when I got my set of bases yesterday.

The bases have an innovative system as they come in two pieces - a base insert and a black base with a recessed center to hold the first part. These two fit together perfectly. The insert is molded in plastic, which means that you no longer need to pin the minis (at least teh plastic ones) to bases.
I chose the planking set as I thought it might be useful both for my Guild and Neverborn crews. I've used a resin version of these before and I really liked the dilapidated look. The new bases seem to be identical to the old ones (at least at first glance). The set consists of 1x50mm, 6x40mm, 10x30mm bases along with their inserts

So how do the new bases look like in comparison to the classic resin versions? First of all, that's definitely not a big improvement in general quality. While there are no traces of air bubbles (which were sometimes present in the resin ones), the details seem a bit less crisp. What's more, there are some mold lines that would require cleaning up prior to painting.
I do like the idea that you can paint the inserts first and glue them to the bases later on to ensure a clear black finish on the rim. It should makes things easier.
Well, I can't really say much more at this point. I'll need to paint at least a few before I can give a more definite opinion.
To powinno ułatwić pracę.

Take Back the Night

I thought I'd try to do things differently this time round. Malifaux is still in its infancy in Poland so I decided I'd start writing posts in two languages and try to encourage more people to become interested in this amazing game. It will probably be much more time-consuming but maybe it's wort the effort?

A few months ago I had a chance to paint one of the newly released crews for Wyrd - Molly and her gang. Before I write about the paintjob, I'd like to share a few observations on the models themselves. First of all, I really like the original metal models released a few years ago. The quality of sculpts was very impressive and the models had a great feel to them. They definitely set the bar high.

The plastic set not only doesn't disappoint but also surprises with how well the parts fit together. Hardly any GS is needed, I only had to use some on the recesses left after assembling Molly's dress. The models are smaller and seem more fiddly at first glance but putting them together went smoothly (even though I didn't have the instructions to help me). Molly's totem might be an exception here - it comes in 20 tiny bits and even each of the syringes is glued separately. I guess some people will complain about that but then the bits fit so well together that it isn't really a big challenge to assemble it.

I decided to use cobblestone bases from Micro Art Studio. I thought they would tie in well with the theme of Molly's crew.
As far as painting goes, I tried to follow the box artwork. I liked what I saw there as the colors indicate a complete randomness and lack of cohesion in what the little guys put on. Crooligans - Molly's go-to objective runners are basically undead orphans. They run away from their parents and exposure to ill effects of staying in the Quarantine zone has changed them but it has also allowed them to learn new skills. They are pretty fast but what makes them so special is the ability to teleport up to '5 every time they interact. To make things worse for Molly's opponents. she can actually summon them.
Te dzieciaki zombie to rewelacyjne jednostki do stawiania wszelkiego typu scheme markers.

Speaking of Molly, I really enjoyed painting her yellow dress. I used a variety of washes (green/blue) to really work on the worn look. The miniature is one of the best I've seen in M2E. Great pose and really nice detail on the dress. All those folds on the material made painting it so much fun. The only problem I see with her is that she is pinned to the base just in one place, which doesn't make it the most durable connection. In game, she is a great summoner and can also support her crews. Her totem facilitates both.
Świetna, dynamiczna poza i naprawdę dobra jakość detali.

Phillip and the Nanny is probably the most twisted miniature I've seen from Wyrd Games. A severed (and talking!) head of a man who in his life was an influential writer put in a baby carriage pushed by a lady who looks as if she's just walked out of a torture chamber. They come together on a 50 mm base and have a few nice tricks with Scheme Marker manipulation.

Made in Japan

Sadly, my adventure in the Iron Painter has come to an end. I was eliminated in round 3 (still a better result than the previous edition where I was knocked out in round 2). I faced a very strong competitor - a Swedish lady known on the forums as Sybarite, so I knew that going any further would be very tough. Still, I did my best and created a Widow Weaver proxy along with some terrain (more about it in the previous post). Well, it wasn't enough so I can now only wish my opponent good luck in the next round(s).
I was a bit disappointed by the fact that I got an overall worst score for what I personally thought had been my best entry in the competition.Well, I guess it just goes to show how hard it is to achieve success in this kind of competition, where not only the skills but also the theme are evaluated by three judges.

Anyway, it is still possible to take part in the fun (or madness) of Iron Painter and submit your ELIM entries. I decided I'd keep the it going for at least another round. This time the theme was "Made in Japan". That's a really interesting theme that makes some really crazy interpretations possible. Obviously, Japan has rich and impressive history and one of the most fascinating cultures in the world. However, when thinking about contemporary Japan, many other things come to mind. My first thought was "Pokemon". Even though I've never watched the show, I thought I might at least try to use one of my models, tweak it a little and give it an interesting paintjob. I chose one of the small Terror Tots and looked up some images of the creatures from the franchise. I chose the one called Charmander

The conversion wasn't very complicated. I simply removed the tiny horns and added a tail using a tentacle from Wyrd Sewer bits. I also used a head of a plastic flail for the "Poke-Ball" to go further with my take on the theme. I've also used a 40 mm Wyrd Zen base insert and painted it to resemble rice field (something I also associate with Japan). I used some Vallejo Still Water to complete the wet look. I thought that painting the base this way will give the impression that the miniature is actually bigger. It was a quick conversion and a fast paintjob but I had fun working on it.
