Winter Madness

Just when I thought that spring was about to begin, it started snowing again. Well, it's not unusual for this time of year...
I've been anxiously waiting to get a chance to work with these minis ever since I saw 3D renders. I bought them as soon as they were available from Wyrd store during the 10th anniversary sale and started assembling them as soon as I got the parcel. They're absolutely amazing minis with an original design and numerous tiny pieces. I like to challenge myself and avoid using the instructions when I put together Wyrd plastic minis. Working with those felt like playing with a wonderfully twisted 3D puzzle.
I chose blue as the main color for them but added a touch of red and yellow to keep them more vivid. Yellow wash worked quite well on the main body as it blended well with blue. I used GW's Lahmian medium to make sure the transitions were smooth there.

To naprawdę świetne figurki z ciekawym designem i wieloma małymi częściami.

Insidious Madness is an excellent scheme runner, especially in Dremer's crew as they can be summoned in and they can benefit from Daydreams' pushes. They're also Wk 7 with Incorporeal, so they can get to where they're needed really fast. Madnesses also synergize well with Wp - decreasing crews (Pandora, Dreamer with Widow Weaver) as they can effectively lower that statistic.
They're not too resilient as they have only 3 Wds, though defense 6 and Incorporeal can help a little.

Bazaar of Bad Dreams

Bazaar of Bad Dreams is Stephen King's sixth short fiction collection. I was a bit disappointed to find that many of those have been already published in various magazines, websites,  or released independently. But I guess that comes with the territory. I'm an avid fan of King's work and whenever I see something written by him, I read it.
Despite initial disappointment, I was quickly relieved as I found some true gems in there. My favorite has to be Afterlife. It is an interesting vision of what happens with a person after their death. The vision presented here is surprisingly well structured. This perfect organization encountered by the protagonist is contrasted with his confusion and an ending which adds yet another twist. That is just Stephen King at his best.
I enjoyed reading the other ones as well. King excels at creating a short, but coherent story, adding credible characters, and wrapping it all nicely with an interesting (not necessarily complicated) story that ends with well placed punch line. Showing people's emotions, ranging from sadness, happiness, anger, to complete madness, is another of King's strengths. It's nice to find that he still manages to do that so well.

Fight Night - Malifaux 50ss tournament

Last Saturday I played in my second Malifaux tournament. Once again, it took place at Vanaheim.pl store in Kraków. This time 12 people showed up, which is twice the number that competed in the previous one. Strats and schemes were known ahead of time, so I was able to prepare my lists accordingly. I chose to run Dreamer in all games (despite the new Assassinate scheme in pool for round one).

Round I
Deployment: Standard Deployment
Strategy: Interference
Schemes:
Convict Labor, Hunting Party, Show of Force, Neutralize the LeaderDetonate the charges

I took:
Dreamer 7ss cache
+ Dreams of Pain
+ On Wings of Darkness
+ Aether connection
Teddy
+ Retribution's Eye
Doppelganger
+ Mimic's Blessing
Coppelius
+ On Dreaming Wings
Waldgeist
2 Daydreams

In this game I faced the local Henchman and his Misaki. He also took Sensei Yu, 2 Katanaka Snipers (ouch, that's a tough combination to play against), Tengu, Shadow Effigy, and Sidir. I realized I'd need some minions/peons so I had to make sure there were some Daydreams around my Enforcers. The table was set up so that the Snipers had a clear view on most of it and my movement was very limited. I think it played an important part in the final outcome.
Turn one consisted of moving minis into position. I summoned the twins and one Daydream and lowered Waking by 1. I placed Doppelganger in position further ahead in hopes of luring Misaki into combat and dropping a scheme next to her for Detonate the Charges. I succeeded in getting her to move there, but was had been shot at before that happened and... flipped a Black Joker for Df and got 4 Wds on Doppelganger. Anyway, I put Teddy and Coppelius close to make sure they can deal with her next turn. I was pretty confident I could secure Initiative, after all I hired Doppelganger just for that purpose and I had a Red Joker in hand.
Turn two started with my opponent flipping... a Red Joker for Initiative. I really needed to start that turn so I quickly cheated my Joker in. We flipped again, tied, flipped again and I lost (despite burning a soulstone). It was w turning point as Misaki activated, burned an upgrade that made her harder to hit and quickly killed Doppelganger and Coppelius. These were tough loses and I knew that catching up now would be an uphill battle. I only managed to squeeze 3 VP from Detonate the charges under these circumstances after Coppelius got summoned again and placed Scheme Marker for the scheme (one of the others was placed by... Teddy).
I had hard time maneuvering my models and keeping them hidden from snipers. This limited my options. I managed to heal the twins up but they didn't do much, staying behind cover most of the time. I took Aether Connection upgrade as I thought Dreamer might be targeted often in the game. Looking back at the game, Otherworldly would have been a much better choice for the summoning version of Dreamer. Choosing Neutralize the leader was risky and proved next to impossible against a master who was able to generate negative flips for Df. I probably would have been better off with Hunting Party.
The final score was Ten Thunders 6 - 3 Neverborn. Despite the loss, I enjoyed the game a lot. My opponent was a great guy, there were no negative emotions, and we even swapped some fun 'Faux stories as we played. I also had a chance to clarify some questions I had about rules with an experienced player.

Snipers and Sensei Yu in position

Dreamer's summoning corner
Przywołałem bliźnięta i 1 Daydreama.
Teddy.
Miałem duże problemy z manewrowaniem modelami i trzymaniem ich poza zasięgiem snajperów. To mocno ograniczało moje opcje.

Round II
Deployment: Flank Deployment
Strategy: Headhunter
Schemes:
Convict Labor, Leave Your Mark, Exhaust Their Forces, Covert BreakthroughFrame For Murder

I took:
Dreamer 7ss cache
+ Restless Dreams
+ Tantrum
+ On Wings of Darkness
Widow Weaver
Teddy
+ Retribution's Eye
Coppelius
+ On Dreaming Wings
+ Insidious Madness
+ Insidious Madness
Daydream

My opponent Chose Seamus, Copycat Killer, Sybelle, 2 Flesh Constructs, 2 Canine Remains, 2 Belles. I don't remember all the  upgrades...

I had a solid plan for this one before the game started. Madnesses and Coppelius were to deal with Breakthrough, while Teddy (together with Chompy) was to keep as many models tied in Melee in one place as possible. The plan was also to get Teddy killed before or on turn 3, preferably by Seamus or Sybelle. I was lucky as Wp was the weakest point of my opponent's crew and using Widow's Web markers made passing Terrifying tests a big challenge for Ressers and effectively drained my opponent's hand throughout the whole game.
Turn one started with Dreamer shooting Canine Remains twice and killing it. Teddy hit the other dog once and tied it in Ml. Seamus backalley'd across the board to kill (together with Copycat Killer) one of my Madnesses. I had a really bad hand in this turn, stoned for three cards, and drew two 1s and one 2. I decided to keep the worst cards in hand and discarded them at the beginning of turn two. I kept only the Black Joker.
It worked quite well as I was able to build a solid hand for the next turn (although I kept stoning for cards for the rest of the game). Flesh Constructs with their low Wp proved completely ineffective here but I suspected that one of them might be the "sucker" so I didn't try very hard to kill them. Teddy quickly dealt with the other wounded doggy, getting rid of my opponent's Scheme runners.
In turn 3 I charged Teddy into a group of models (including Seamus, Copycat killer, one Flesh Construct and a Belle). He died a moment later but forced Sybelle to waste two precious soulstones to do that, securing me three VP along the way. I was very lucky with my flips in this game. I drew 10 or higher for pretty much all of Chompy's attacks. He is a true melee beast. The ability to generate 6 attacks each turn is just ridiculous and he proved extremely efficient.
In the end it was Neverborn 10 - 3 Ressurectionists. I was able to pick up the head marker every turn thanks to pushes from Daydreams. Those little guys make this crew so much faster! I was also able to tie enough of my opponent's models in Chompy's Ml range to prevent him from scoring more VPs for Covert Breakthrough. I also have to admit that my opponent had awful flips for the most part and his hand didn't offer much help. Despite that he didn't take the game too seriously and we were both able to enjoy playing Malifaux in good atmosphere. Also, that was the best painted crew I've ever played against. All of the models in my opponent's crew were painted to a high standard and it really improved the whole experience.

Turn one

Keeping it tight in the center

Teddy raz uderzył drugiego pieska i pozostał w zwarciu. Seamus użył umiejętności Back Alley i, na spółkę z Copycat Killer, zastrzelił jedną z moich Madness.
To prawdziwa maszyna do walki wręcz.

Round III
Deployment: Corner Deployment
Strategy: Squatter's Rights
Schemes:
Convict Labor, Take Prisoner, Hunting PartyA Quick Murder, Occupy Their Turf

I took:
Dreamer 7ss cache
+ Tantrum
+ Restless Dreams
+ On Wings of Darkness
Widow Weaver
Teddy
+ On Dreaming Wings
Doppelganger
Waldgeist x2
Daydream

I've faced my opponent before when he declared Gremlins and got to experience Ulix and his pigs in action. This time he chose Somer, Lenny, Pigapult, Old Cranky, Taxidermist, and a ton of Bayou Gremlins (more of them were summoned later). Seeing the green horde, bunched up in the corner was a disheartening sight.
My plan was simple - charge my beatsticks in, kill Lenny and then hope I can score more VPs for Hunting Party and maybe even a point or two for Squatter's Rights. So this time I chose no schemes relying on dropping markers but I realized that Gremlins were going to outactivate me anyway so they'd have an advantage here and there was little I could do to prevent that.
My opponent started by moving a few Gremlins around, summoning more with Somer, and then when I was outactivated, he catapulted some more onto the Squat Markers, which were taken by them soon afterwards. I pushed my flying Teddy forward, summoned three times with Dreamer and left him on Waking 3. I also positioned Teddy in place, ready for attack in next turn.
I won initiative in turn 2 (which is something that you can almost take for granted if you have a Doppelganger in your crew), moved Teddy forward with Gobble you Up,  and then flurried onto Lenny. The big Gremlin was left on one wound. Next I moved Dreamer three times for a total of 21 inches, used his extra Sh attack from Ranged expert, and summoned Chompy within 6'. At this point I had two Terrifying beatsticks in the middle of green mass, which is right where I wanted and needed them, especially Chompy with Melee master who was still to activate. Unfortunately, I flipped Black Joker on my next Df flip and Somer cheated in a Red Joker for damage. I tried to burn a soulstone for prevention but got only 1 point off and Chompy went down, leaving unprotected Dreamer far away from his friendly Nightmares. It was a high risk high reward move which could have won me the game but that Black Joker meant I was in a tight spot.
Dreamer did his best to survive and burnt three soulstones for damage prevention but eventually went down soon afterwards. My only hope was Widow Weaver. She got a push from a Daydream and shot Lenny (her Ca, non-projectile attack is really useful), finally killing him and earning me much needed 3 VPs.
I wasn't really able to do as much as after that lack of Dreamer limited my options. I managed to get three more points (two for strat and one for Hunting Party). My opponent easily scored three for Occupy Their Turf and kept his other scheme hidden. I realized it was Take Prisoner but wasn't sure on which of my models. I suspected he chose one of my Waldgeists as they're slow and difficult to take down anyway. I used Teddy to secure Squat Marker and in doing so prevented my opponent from scoring for Strategy in the last turn. A moment later Gremlins moved in and he announced Take Prisoner. The final result was Neverborn 6 - 8 Gremlins. It was a very dynamic game and I knew I had to play aggressively if I wanted to achieve anything. That Black Joker on Df flip and early loss of Master were really hard for me and I struggled to do anything. Six VPs are not that bad, but it could have been much better.

Chompy WAS here

Widok ściśniętej w rogu zielonej hordy odbierał trochę serce do gry.
Ustawiłem tez Miśka w pozycji gotowości do ataku w następnej turze.
Mój przeciwnik bez większych problemów zdobył 3 punkty za Occupy their Turf i trzymał w tajemnicy swoją drugą intrygę. Chwilę później osaczyły go Gremliny i druga intryga - Take Prisoner, została ujawniona. Ten nieszczęsny Czarny Joker na Df i szybka strata Mastera mocno skomplikowały moją sytuację i musiałem mocno kombinować, żeby zdobyć jakieś VP.

Overall, it was a very enjoyable tournament. I played against Ressers and Somer for the first time and learnt a bit about these masters. I regret only one thing - I didn't try anything new and I think I should have tried a different model or two. I also need to work on being better prepared for plan B. Malifaux is a very dynamic game and you have to be prepared that even in what looks like safe situation things can quickly go south.

Who let the dogs out?

Two of these models are simply redesigned in plastic and cast so that they're a it smaller. The other two (first and second from the left) are new ones and I like them a bit more. They were all easy to assemble and a bit tricky to pin to their bases. I tried to give each of them a slightly different color of fur.

Guild Hounds are excellent scheme runners. They're cheap, fast, and can be significant if they stay close to one another (unless they're used in McCabe's list, his totem Luna makes them significant). They're quite vulnerable but their decent damage track can catch many people off guard. Weak damage is plain 1, but it gets only better with a moderate of 3 and Critical Strike on Rams. They can also charge for (1) while close to Scheme Markers.

Ogary Gildii to świetni Scheme Runnerzy.

Last but not least...

Elantris

Brandon Sanderson's writing is very enjoyable to follow. The moment I started reading "Elantris", I got sucked into the story immediately. Sanderson doesn't spend numerous pages building up tension and introducing characters. Readers are drawn right into the main story from the beginning of the novel.

Elantris was known as city of gods. Its inhabitants had power over natural elements and could shape reality to whatever suited them best. The also had very powerful healing skills. Their power ended suddenly with an event that came to be known as "Reod". As a result, they lost all their skills and become cursed with a disease called "Shaod". Those who became ill lost their hair, their skin was covered in black patches, and their hearts stopped beating, but their bodies and minds would not die. Despite that, even the smallest injury caused great pain. People who became ill in this way were thrown into the city to continue their pathetic existence there. Elantris turned into a shadow of its former glory.

There are three main characters and the narrative is broken into three main point views. Each offers a completely different approach to the main story.
Raoden, the prince of neighboring city of Arelon, becomes an Elantrian at the beginning of the novel. He refuses to give in to his new reality and tries to bring a sense of  purpose to his new hometown. He is relentless in his attempts to discover the true nature of Reod and to establish some kind of order.
Sarene is Raoden's bride-to-be. She is arranged to formally start her politically arranged marriage with the prince but arrives in Arelon only to find that her husband has just become an Elantrian. She uses all her energy to immerse herself in the intrigues of Arelon's political games. Her sharp mind and youthful energy stand in contrast to the apathy emanating from Elantris.
Hrathen is a high-ranking priest of Dorethi who arrives in Arelon with one goal. He is to convert the citizens to his religion and has only three months to achieve that. Hrathen is an experienced priest and his previous mission ended in the ruin of the entire country as it was forcefully converted into Dorethai. This time, he wants to avoid bloodshed.

The book reads very well and I really liked the idea of sending people who are dead to a separate city guarded from the outside. It is an original vision of purgatory. What I didn't like though was the language used by some of the characters. Some of the dialogues sounded too modern and seemed a bit artificial when the protagonists kept using sarcastic remarks. They felt a bit out o place.

Staking a Claim vs Shenlong

Deployment
I had another game with Dreamer earlier this week. A friend of mine who used to torment my Guild with his Ophelia dropped by. This time he brought a beautifully painted Shenlong crew. That was my first encounter with this master so after exchanging some basic information about who does what in our crews we flipped for strategy and schemes.
Deployment: Standard
Strategy: Stake a Claim
Schemes: ALitS, Murder Protege, Assassinate Breakthrough, Take Prisoner
As I didn't really know what it takes to kill Shenlong, I chose Murder Protege, thinking that taking down Sensei Yu should be doable. I also took Breakthrough as I thought my Silurids should take care of that easily, with extra help from Insidious Madness that I planned to summon later. I'd need to be on my opponent's half of the board for the Strategy anyway.
No schemes benefited killing minions so I chose the summoner Dreamer with Dreams of Pain, Otherworldly, and On Wings of Darkness. I also took Teddy, Hooded Rider, 2 Silurids, and a Daydream. Shenlong's Crew had Sensei Yu, Ten Thunders brother, Peasant, Shadow Effigy, Katanaka Sniper, and two Monks of High River. My opponent took ALitS and Breakthrough.

Żadna z intryg nie dawała punktów ezpośrednio za zabijanie minionów, więc wybrałem Dreamera w wersji summoner z Dreams of Pain, Otherworldly i On Wings of Darkness. Wziąłem też Teddy'ego, Hooded Ridera, 2 Siluridy i 1 Daydreama. Ekipa Shenlonga składała się z Sensei Yu, Ten Thunders brother, Peasant, Shadow Effigy, Katanaka Sniper, oraz dwóch Monks of High River. Mój preciwnik wybrał ALitS i Breakthrough.

My opponent initially planned to deploy his Katanaka Sniper on top of Water Tower. It was Ht 5 and would allow him to abuse that part of the board but I could easily avoid it simply by moving on the other half. In the end he deployed the sniper close to the train, where I was able to Charge it (after a push from Daydream) with my Teddy and push him into Hazardous Terrain for a turn 1 kill. It was a very important action for me as it allowed my other minions to move forward and start dropping markers without the risk of being shot from the distance.

Monk kills a Stitched, only to be killed by Hooded Rider's charge a moment later

I was very impressed with how well Shenlong and his henchman manipulate scheme markers. My opponent was pretty much able to put down ALitS turn 2. However, he lacked killing power to survive an assault from Teddy and buffed up Hooded Rider. Still, I was only able to kill Sensei Yu in turn 4 after dropping Chompy on him. We called it a game at this point as I was able to remove enough of my opponent's models to prevent him from scoring any Strategy and Scheme points, apart from 1 for ALitS.

Mimo to, brakowało mu siły przebicia do porradzenia sobie z Teddym i wzmocnionym Jeźdźcem.

Chompy says "Hello"

It was an interesting game and I was particularly impressed with Hooded Rider. Predictably, he did nothing  and stayed mostly hidden during turn 1 and 2, but beginning from turn 3, his high mobility (a (0) 6 inch push combined with Unimpeded Cg10 and Rg 3' on his sword) allowed me to quickly put him where he was needed most. Teddy was killed by Shenlong but caused some havoc, flipping a Red Joker on his damage flip against Sensei Yu.
I knew I was going to use summoner Dreamer so I was able to hire both Teddy and Hooded Rider, bringing a Madness for scheme running and a Stitched Together for tanking in the course of the game. If I had to choose just one of those, I'd have a hard time deciding. Teddy is a Nightmare so he can benefit from pushes both from Nightmares, and from Dreamer's Empty Night. His damage output is very good. The Rider starts a bit weaker than that but becomes much better after turn 2. As an enforcer, he can't benefit from Dreamer's Empty Night, but he has his (0) action to take care of that. Also, he is capable of removing Scheme Markers after a successful attack. Both have a lot to offer so it's definitely not an easy choice.
I also learnt a lot about positioning. It is essential for Dreamer's effectiveness and his survival. When I threw Chompy into Sensei Yu's face, I made sure there were three Nightmares within 3' to protect the Kid once he got back. Also, I tried to activate my models within 6' of Dreamer to keep them healed whenever I could. Still, the trickiest part of running summoning Dreamer is managing cards. I planned to start with Coppelius and twins but had to save high cards for Teddy's attacks on the sniper. In the following turns I also had to maintain a balance between what I wanted to summon and what I had to do that turn (and make sure I have some cards left to discard should the Dreamer be targeted). I need to test Bloodwretches as they have a potential to generate extra cards.

Muszę przetestować Bloodwretches, mają niezły potencjał do dodania dodatkowych kart.

Dreaming on

I got another chance to play some Malifaux this week in an event organized by Gentleman's Club in Warsaw last Saturday. I took my Neverborn again and played both games with Dreamer. I didn't keep any notes so I will just briefly summarize both of my games. I don't play the game too often so I thought I'd take my gaming mat and terrain with me. I've spent some time preparing it so there's no reason it shouldn't be used.

Wziąłem swoich Neverborn i ponownie grałem Dreamerem.

Game one:
Strategy: Reckoning
Schemes: ALiTS, Bodyguard, Plant Explosives, Assassinate , and I'm not sure abot the fifts one but it might have been Distract

Dreamer (cache 7)
+ Restless Dreams
+ Tantrum
+ On Wings of Darkness
Teddy
+On Dreaming Wings
Widow Weaver
Insidious Madness
Stitched together
Waldgeist
The Depleted

My opponent had Perdita with Trick Shooting and Aura Ancestral, Francisco with Wade in, Nino, Judge, Hunter, Austringer, Enslaved Nephilim

In the first one I faced Rafał (who I hope will become a Henchman soon). He is definitely a good player and I knew it wasn't going to be easy. I chose one scheme relying on dropping schemes, and a killy one. I knew killing Dita with buffs from Francisco is hard but I was hoping to get her bodyguard first and deal with her later. I decided to play Shooty/Chompy Dreamer with my core units (Teddy, Widow Weaver, Insidious Madness) along with other minions that could absorb more damage before they go down (Waldgeist, Depleted) as I realized that my opponent would easily score for strategy by killing off my Daydreams. I wanted to have a pair of more resilient minions for the final part of the game.
Nothing much happened at the beginning. Insidious Madness survived (cheating in a 13) a focused shot from Nino, and I pushed Teddy forward and used his (0) Ca action on Ortega's young sniper. I was sure I'd be able to get it as I cheated in a Red Joker but my opponent did the same so I was only able to walk (or rather fly) Teddy in position and lock the kid in melee on the roof of a building (and easily hugging him to death at the beginning of next turn).
In turn two I focused on dropping enough Scheme Markers to make sure I'd score full 3 VP from Plant Explosives. In the end I had to use Chompy to lay the marker in range of enough Guild models get them.
I won initiative in turn three. I probably should have activated my wounded Teddy first as he was surrounded by three models (Fran, Judge, Hunter) and he'd probably take down at least one of them, regenerating some wounds as well. Instead, I activated Chompy, killed Austringer, and positioned him so that I'd be able to attack Perdita on the next turn. I was also thinking about the fact that Assassinate was in the pool and I didn't want to risk leaving my leader exposed. Teddy went down moments later.
I had a very good hand with three high Crows in turn 4. I also won initiative, so I moved a Daydream, pushed Chompy into melee range and killed Perdita (my opponent's awful flips helped a lot). I lost my Insidious Madness and Depleted (good thing I remembered he explodes when he dies) along the way. In the end it was Guild 3 - 7 Neverborn and I finally got my first win with the Dreamer after suffering 4 defeats. You can see some pics from the game below (courtesy of Gentleman's Club).

Game two
Strategy: Stake a Claim
Schemes: ALiTS, Protect Territory, Deliver a Message, Distract, Power Ritual

Dreamer (cache 7)
+ Dreams of Pain
+ Otherworldly
+ On Wings of Darkness
Teddy
+Retribution's Eye
Silurid
Silurid
Waldgeist
The Depleted
Daydream

My opponent took Pandora with Fugue State, Depression, Candy, Teddy, 2 Sorrows, Doppelganger, and Primordial Magic. I don't remember all of the upgrades he brought.

Seeing the pool, I quickly decided to take the summoning Dreamer as there were no schemes that benefited from killing models. I didn't want to take two schemes relying on dropping schemes so I took Protect Territory and Deliver a Message. I took two Silurids as I knew they're perfect for the latter and their speed could be useful in netting me some points for the strategy.
I've actually faced my opponent a long while ago (he was playing Jakob then and I used Perdita). I won then but I remembered it was a hard-fought battle so I expected to be challenged here as well with the bad rep Pandora has.
Turn one I stoned for cards and... discarded all three that I picked. Clearly, the turn didn't start well for me. I was hoping to get enough high cards to summon Lelu and Lilitu turn 1 and heal them up for action in turn 2. I ended up bringing in Coppelius (I've finally got a chance to use him in game), Stitched, and a Daydream. I dropped some scheme markers for Protect Territory and we finished the uneventful turn 1.
My opponent played Pandora aggressively and with some good flips (Red Joker on the Damage), made the Teddy hug itself to death at the beginning of turn 2. It was a tough loss as I was really hoping to make good use of Retribution's Eye. Scoring 3VP for Deliver the Message was a small consolation. I knew I had to react quickly so I summoned the twins in safe distance from Pandora (two Sorrows were right behind her, ready to set in and start hurting my crew with their nasty Wp auras). I activated Chompy, hit Pandora once and followed that with another attack, flipping Red Joker for damage. Chompy was definitely having a good day, killing second master in his second game of the day. In the meanwhile Coppelius took down the Doppelganger, and made a healing flip, only to be eaten by my opponent's Teddy a moment later. After that Stitched targeted Teddy, failed his Gample your Life, got reactivate, and hit Teddy for 7 damage.
On the other side of the board my other Silurid dropped a Claim Marker and survived some damage from Candy and an assault from Iggy. It was a fun turn as we both used up our hands early on and relied on flips straight from the deck for the most part.
At this point I was in the lead (4-0), had a few more minions to activate, and was pretty much in control on the situation (especially after killing my opponent's master). We were running out of time anyway so we decided to call it a game. I had some lucky flips for sure but I felt I managed to maintain the balance between using high cards for summoning and keeping enough high/middle ones to be actually able to do something else.
Only two quick pics of this battle as I was too focused on the game to take more...

To było dość dawno temu, on wtedy grał Lynchem, a ja Perditą).
W końcu przywołałem Coppeliusa (w końcu miałem okazję użyć go w grze), Stitched Together i Daydreama.

Overall, it was a very nice event. I think that's been the first time we had 10 people playing Malifaux simultaneously. This is very promising and I hope the trend continues.
I finally got some wins with Dreamer but the most important thing for me is that I had a great time and enjoyed both my games a lot. I think I'm slowly beginning to get to grips with synergies within this crew. I see Dreamer as a versatile master who can work well with a variety of schemes and quickly adapt to new circumstances. I'm probably still not using him to his full potential, but I definitely enjoy learning how to run this master.

My first Malifaux Tournament

I've never been much of a gamer and most of my hobby experienced are connected with painting miniatures. However, I also enjoy playing Malifaux every now and then. Last Saturday I went to my first tournament. The previous time I played the game was in August so I was definitely out of practice (and truth be told, I've never played Malifaux on a regular basis...). The tournament was organized at the Vanaheim hobby store in Kraków. It's a 300+ km from where I live but since my family was staying close for the weekend, I decided to drop by.
The format was 45ss and all the strategies and schemes were announced ahead of time. I used to play mostly Guild but I also have a decent Neverborn collection, so I decided to take the Dreamer for a spin (I'd played him only once before and that as a summoner). My list looked like more or less like that:

Dreamer
+Restless Dreams
+Tantrum
+On Wings of Darkness/Aether Connection
Daydream/Daydreams
Doppelganger
Insidious Madness
Insidious Madness
Teddy
+Retribution's Eye
Widow Weaver

It was my first experience with Chompy Dreamer so I tried a list that I though would give me a good idea of how this master works. I played my first game with a Doppelganger (I wanted to make sure I'd be able to drop Scheme Markers in the middle of the board) but I replaced her with three Daydreams for the other two games. It generally worked well as the crew was fast, resilient and there were a lot of extra pushed from Daydreams when I dropped Doppelganger. However, I also felt that with the 45ss limit, I could have used more minions for the strategies. I guess at standard 50ss I'll try to add a Waldgeist or a Stitched Together to add some backup to the crew.

Round I
Deployment: Flank Deployment
Strategy: Collect the Bounty
Schemes: Convict Labor, Take Prisoner, Leave Your Mark, Public Demonstration, Search The Ruins

I was quite surprised to find out that it would be a mirror match with my opponent's list very similar to mine (he didn't take the Doppelganger and started with three Daydreams). I chose two schemes that relied on dropping Scheme Markers, hoping to deal with them quickly and then move on to defending/attacking depending on the outcome of first two turns.
I had some bad luck in this game as I flipped the Black Joker twice in very important moments during the first two turns (and also flipped it once more in the third). I also made some really stupid mistakes like forgetting about Chompy's Melee Expert from upgrade, turning Dreamer into Chompy in the middle of his activation (wasting two of my master's AP), and forgetting to drop the Retribution's Eye upgrade on Teddy when it charged the opponent's Dreamer. I did flip Black Joker on the first attack, but even one successful weak damage would have forced my opponent to play Dreamer more defensively.
The game went back and forth at the beginning with neither of us being able to cause too much damage and both trying to drop Scheme Markers (although I did lose Widow Weaver early on...). My opponent managed to take down my Insidious Madness with a well placed Attach from his Widow Weaver, which seriously limited my options. I even tried using Teddy as my Scheme runner in desperation but it was too little and too late. In the end I lost 0-4 which wasn't that bad taking into account the fact that my opponent was one of top local players and he also won the tournament (he also tabled Perdita 10-0 in his second game).

Round II
Deployment: Close Deployment
Strategy: Guard the Stash
Schemes: Line in the Sand, Plant Evidence, Make the Suffer, Breakthrough, Assassinate

In this game I faced Ulix and another good player (he ended up second in the tournament). I don't remember his entire list but for sure he had Old Major, Merris, one Lightning Bug, The Sow, and some other pigs. I've never faced Gremlins before so this game was full of surprises for me. I took Plant Evidence and Make them Suffer. My thinking was that Widow Weaver would start dropping Web Markers around the Stash markers from the start, making it easier to keep the terrifying Chompy and Teddy there.
Ulix worked really well as a support master, and those 1 AP Pig charges were really scary. At some point in the game I had a pig running wild at the back of my crew, happily munching on Daydreams and Alps and doing several attacks in one activation. I managed to use Widow to paralyze a big target but later on Chompy failed in killing Old Major, leaving him on 1 Wd. It proved important as he was carrying the Corn Husks upgrade, which enabled my opponent to easily get rid of my Plant Evidence markers. I was also quite surprised with Ulix's 4' engagement range and the fact that I had to deal with two Piglets (minions!) after getting rid of the big one.
In the end, I lost 8-2, scoring my only points from Make them Suffer. I would have probably scored one more if there was more time but my opponent would be then probably able to maximize his score. Of course, I had a chance to look at his cards before the game started but it was too much information to process in such short time. I would probably have done better with one or two Waldgeists in the middle, making a large tarpit and limiting the movement of those pesky pigs. Anyway, it was a fun game and I learnt quite a few new things.

Wybrałem Plant Evidence i Make them Suffer. Planowałem zrzucić parę Web Markerów w okolicach markerów Stash w centrum, ułatwiając Chompy'emu i Teddy'emu działanie.
Ostatecznie przegrałem 2-8, zdobywając jedyne punkty za Make Them Suffer.

Round III
Deployment: Corner Deployment
Strategy: Extraction
Schemes: Line in the Sand, Distract, Protect Territory, Frame For Murder, Plant Explosives

In my final game I faced Jack Daw and his Tormented. My opponent took Montressor with some additions from the Crossroads Seven (Envy, Sloth, Lust, Pride). I had what I thought was solid plan for this game, choosing Protect Territory and Frame for Murder on my Teddy,
The beginning of the game consisted mainly of me pushing Teddy forward and my opponent moving him back. The best part happened when Teddy had to move into base contact with Insidious Madness as a result of "Now Kiss" by Lust.
Jacky Daw was moving all over the place easily, with the movement shenanigans in the crew, most of them were on my half of the board turn one. I knew I had to take down Envy as a main threat to my Dreamer - his blast attacks could do serious damage on the kid. Teddy managed to inflict some damage, before being killed by Jack himself. My opponent was quite surprised when I cheated down the total duel to make sure he gets killed, earning me three VP. Shortly after that I managed to finish off Envy with a well placed bite from Widow Weaver. My Madnesses dropped 4 scheme markers and stood near them to make sure I got full score from Protect Territory. Things were looking up. Unfortunately, I made a really stupid mistake and charged Pride with my Alp. I didn't do any damage but what was worse, I forgot about the marker he had there in front of him. My other big mistake was moving my Daydream away from a marker dropped by Jack Daw, only to be within 3' of the one next to which my other two models were standing . As a result, what would have been my first victory, quickly turned into a 6-7 defeat. Still, it was a really close game and I enjoyed it a lot. I've never played three games in a row before so I found it hard to concentrate at the end and it cost me a lot. In retrospect, I think that instead of using Dreamer for support mainly, I should have dropped Chompy on Jack early as he might have done some damage to him with a built in + for his Ml attack. Being unable to cheat at a negative twist makes it extremely hard to cause this Master any trouble using conventional attacks.

Początek gry to przede wszystkim pushowanie Miśka do przodu i odbijanie go do tyłu przez mojego przeciwnika. Najlepsza część to chyba moment, w którym musiał cofnąć się do Insidius Madness w wyniku umiejętności Lust "Now Kiss".

It wasn't a big event as there were only six participants, so my place doesn't feel that bad. I'm still new to the game and learning how to use a new Master isn't a fast process. I wanted to test the core of my list and I will try adding different models in my next games. I made a few stupid mistakes and I definitely need to know my cards well for the next tournament.
The event run smoothly, there were no negative emotions among the players and the atmosphere was nice. The Henchman running it did a great job. All the strategies and schemes for each round were printed and handed out to the participants and if there were any rules questions, he was quick to help. The next tournament is taking place on February 20th and if all goes well I should be there too. Unfortunately, I didn't take my camera with me so all the photos you can see here are courtesy of Vanaheim.
