Widow Weaver, Stitched, and a surprise Bayou guest

Those will likely be my last minis painted in 2020. With Stitched Tigether and Widow Weaver, my Nightmare keyword is almost complete - only Madnesses left. Don't think I will be painting Teddy as there seem to be better alternatives to him in the keyword.

Somer - Avatar of Opulence, eating his life away on the back of Peaches. What a fun mini to paint, although assembling it was a bit complicated...

Three little Gupps - old metal versions back from M1E just to add some variety to my collection.

And an odd model from the Ressurectionists faction, painted for a buddy.

Long-overdue update

It's been almost three months since my previous post. It doesn't mean that I haven't painted anything during that time. On the contrary, these last three months have been pretty good hobby-wise, but let's start from the beginning.

August and part of September were a bit challenging due to lat renovation. We initially wanted only to repaint the walls but ended up doing much more. I used this opportunity to prepare a new hobby corner. One of the main goals was to make sure both of my daughters have their own room, which meant that I had to move my workspace to bedroom. I wanted to have plenty of storage options so I chose modular workspace from hobbyzone.pl I also bought desk with adjustable height from @easydesk_biurka_gamingowe Solid and heavy with some additional options (such as led lighting or media port). Now that I work from home most of the time I wanted to have plenty of space to combine work section with hobby part. Overall, I’m pretty happy with the result as it uses the space to the fullest, combining high functionality with very good quality of all the elements. Below you can see the space before renovation and pictures "after".

I also finally played some games of third edition of Malifaux and even took part in two tournaments. My results were rather poor but I did enjoy several games I played. M3E does eel much faster and more streamlined and the keyword system means that I got to use miniatures I had painted for years but never used them beore (such as Gorar, Adze). I played a ew games with Eurypides, Titania, but in the end settled or Zoraida as my main master - still the aesthetics appeal the most to me and the way this crew plays is fun too.

And as for painting - more pictures can be found on my Instagram account here but below you can see an overview.

Som'er Boston Jones

I painted this one for a buddy who is one of the top Malifaux players in Poland. He can make pretty much any Gremlin crew work and beat you, but will do so in a friendly atmosphere. I got some Guilders from him so in exchange I offered to paint a mini of his choice. He gave me Somer so that's what I worked on.
The details on the miniature are fine but there were some larger gaps I had to fill in with GS after assembling it, in particular around his waist. Somer's pose doesn't really make much sense so I chose a larger resin base from Micro Art Studio to somehow compensate for the overly dynamic pose.

Since the guy is an avid fan of the NBA, I wanted to make sure there are some  references to it in the paintjob. Boston Celtics team was a no-brainer as the color choices would match a Gremlin very well. The clover pattern on his vest also doesn't seem out of place here. To make sure he resembles the leprechaun from Celtics logo, I also painted the rim of his top hat white and chose a shade of orange for the round bottle that was meant to resemble a basket ball.
Painting green skin can be tricky as this color isn't that easy to work with. I used a bright shade as a base, washed it with light brown, and then mixed it with some yellow for highlights. I kept the palette warm while I was working on the rest of the model as I thought vivid colors go well with Gremlins.

Somer is a Jack of all trades. He can buff his crew, summon more Gremlins, dish out big damage, and won't go down easily. His versatility makes him a top tier master. Facing an experienced opponent who runs Somer is always a challenge.

Burt Jebsen

I've seen this model in most of the Gremlin crews I've faced. His lower Sh value of 5 is not that bad when you look at the potential triggers you can pull off, especially the ability to take the action again. His Ml is a solid 6 and with an extra ram he will hit for 4/5/6. There is also his tactical action that can clutter up enemy models (which is neat as his Sh attack has a blast on moderate and severe).
Burt is a Gremlin, so he can go Reckless. His is also Slippery, meaning he can choose another friendly model within 2' to be the target of attack instead of him. He is also immune to damage from Pulse effects. If he wins a Df duel on a Ram, he can deal 2/3/4 damage that cannot be cheated. And he's Hard to Kill. That's quite a lot for a 7ss enforcer. There's the mercenary tax to take into account if you hire him out of faction, but he may find his place in some of my Neverborn crews.

Painting skin was the main challenge while I was working on him. I used bright vivid shade of green to begin with, toned it down with bright brown glazes, and then brought it back by using base color mixed with increasing amounts of yellow.

A Tournament, Nurses, and a Crocodile

On Saturday I played in another Malifaux tournament. It was a two day event with five games but I was able to participate in only three on the first day. I used summoning Dreamer in all games I played with a similar core list (Dreamer with Dreams of Pain, Otherworldly, Wings of Darkness), Teddy, 3 Daydreams, Doppelganger and other additions (Waldgeist, Freikorps Trapper, Tuco), depending on the schemes.

Używałem Dremera w wersji summoner z podobnym trzonem bandy w każdej grze (Dreamer z Dreams of Pain, Otherworldly, Wings of Darkness), Teddy, 3 Daydreamy, Doppelganger i parę innych dodatków (Waldgeist, Freikorps Trapper, Tuco), w zależności od schemów.

Round 1
Guard The Stash, Corner Deployment
Convict Labor, Show of Force, Hunting Party, Public Demonstration, Inspection

In my first game I faced Collodi for the first time and played against a very good player who quickly took advantage of all my mistakes. I had a wrong idea about this master. I imagined him as a supporter but what came at me was a heavy hitter who very quickly neutralized my Teddy and the rest of his crew easily took out all my summons from turn 1 (Lelu, Lilitu). I also made it easier for him as my positioning was bad. I should have kept the summons hidden safely behind cover and use them later once they've healed up a little.
My second turn hand was terrible as my highest card (after stoning) was a 6. It meant no summons and with half of my crew already gone, my game plan began to fall apart quickly. I should have sent the summons to upper corner and kept Trapper with Dreamer and Teddy bunched up in the bottom corner. I wouldn't have scored any points for the strategy probably but at least I could have got more for schemes that way.
I survived to turn 3 and managed to summon Coppelius in. He charged a Marionette and I scored me my onlyu point in this game. A moment later Dreamer was killed and the game ended 1-7. Tough loss but I got to play against Collodi for the first time and now have a much better idea of what he's capable of. Despite the defeat, I had fun and my opponent was a good sport.

Round 2
Interference, Standard Deployment
Convict Labor, Exhaust Their Forces, Leave Your Mark, Undercover Entourage, Mark For Death

In my second game I faced a guy who is fairly new to Malifaux but has already managed to win a tournament with his Gremlins. This was my best game of the day. Not only because I managed to win against his Ulix. We both had a positive attitude to the game and mainly wanted to have good fun.
My first activation was game-changing as I placed Tuco (with Retribution's Eye) 6' away from his Pigapult and took it out in two shots. It meant I could start my summoning engine without the risk of having everything killed off immediately. Also, the board was quite... original, as you can see in the picture. My Daydreams and Madnesses had no problem moving around it but larger models (such as my opponent's Old Major and Gracie) had their movements seriously limited.
Teddy caused a lot of trouble by killing Old Major and locking Ulix and one of Slop Haulers in combat. On the other side of the beard Chompy took care of Gracie with armor-ignoring punch. In the heat of the battle I mistakenly killed an exhausted Stuffed Piglet but I still managed to pull off a 7-3 victory.

Moja pierwsza aktywacja praktycznie ustawiÅ‚a grÄ™.
Zabiuł Old Majora i zablokował w Ml Ulixa i Slop Haulera.

Painting competition
It took place after the second game. The competition was strong so I felt really happy when it turned out that my Zoraida's crew was voted by participants of the tournament as the best painted crew. I got a big Wyrd Mystery box and inside I found a translucent Whiskey Golem :) I don't have any good pictures of the crew from Saturday, so I took these at home to show you which minis got me the award.

Konkurs malarski odbył się po drugiej grze. Poziom był wysoki, więc tym bardziej ucieszyło mnie wybrane głosami graczy pierwsze miejsce mojej ekipy Zoraidy. Dostałem duży wyrdowski Mystery box, w którym znalazłem przezroczystego Whiskey Golema. Nie mam żadnych dobrych zdjęć ekipy z soboty, więc zrobiłem w domu te, żeby pokazać wam dzięki którym modelom zdobyłem nagrodę.

Round 3
Collect the Bounty, Flank Deployment
Convict Labor, Take Prisoner, Show of Force, Catch and Release, Occupy Their Turf

At this point of the tournament mental fatigue was kicking in and I had lapses of concentration before and throughout the whole game, which cost me a loss in the end. It was a mirror match and my opponent had a similar crew to mine with Widow Weaver and Coppelius starting in. I chose to field a Trapper and Tuco, hoping to put pressure on his summoning engine.
The game was generally going well for me and I even managed to kill Dreamer (it took five hugs from Teddy to finish the kid off as I had forgotten to give him Retribution's Eye...). Unfortunately, I made a really stupid mistake and beautifully placed my scheme markers for Convict Labor... on the wrong center line of the board. It meant that I had to waste two activations of a few minions to push them far enough to score 3VP for Occupy their Turf and then bring them back to start placing markers for Convict Labor. At the same time I had to try to prevent my opponent from scoring his VPs. It was too much for my overheated brain and I ended up losing 4-7. Still, it was a great game which resembled chess as we were both trying to outmaneuver one another. Kudos to my opponent who didn't have many models available for summoning (no Stitched and Teddy) but he played wisely and secured VPs even after losing master.

Overall, it was a great event and I really enjoyed all of my games. The atmosphere was fantastic and it's amazing to see how well the Malifaux meta is developing in my area.
To finish off this post, here are pictures of my most recently painted minis (two of which helped me win the best painted crew award).

First off, McTavish. I was really impressed with how well the miniature is designed. The Crocodile is divided into several pieces that fit together perfectly and there is no need to use Green Stuff. McTavish himself is also easy to assemble but I chose to paint him separately as it would hard to get paint on him otherwise.

Nurses are also fantastic miniatures. One resembles Harley Quiin and the other makes me think of those nightmarish nurses from Silent Hill. The level of detail is very impressive and their design is just fantastic.

Pielęgniarki to też świetne figurki.

This is Bayou!

This was the first Gremlin model I've ever painted. Even before I started painting it, I'd realized it was going to be a new experience with all those bright and vivid colors. Something completely different than my typical choice of dark colors.

Another thing that I'd taken care of before I started painting was preparing the base. It's 50 mm, which means that after putting the miniature on it there was plenty of space left. At first I prepared the cobblestones and then started adding other bits.

The miniature itself is... Well, 'awesome' doesn't even begin to describe how cool it is. It's the whole crazy Bayou package with a mad-looking Gremlin, wearing a pink bunny costume and holding tight onto a giant rooster. It doesn't get better than this.

My fifth game and... first victory!

I played another game last week, this time against Lilith and a list based on Nekima and her skills that enhance the growth of young Nephilims. The scenario was Supply Wagon. I haven't played this one before so I didn't really know what to expect. And having never played against Lilith (or Neverborn) before, I was at a slight disadvantage.

Just a quick pic that shows the situation somewhere around the middle of the game when LJ started her DF flips ;)

In the end it was a very tough battle with both crews reduced significantly and seriously wounded. I think my main mistake was that I underestimated Nekima. My opponent (caen again) played her very skillfully and he proved that she can be very nasty and has a few aces up her sleeve. Still, I should have taken advantage of her relatively low defense... Anyway, it was a good experience and I was looking forward to my next game.

Yesterday I played against Ophelia and her family. It was a 25SS scrap. Knowing that she heavily relied on speed and companion rule, I tried to choose the most mobile crew I could come up with from the minis I currently have. I ended up with :
LJ
The Judge
2x Death Marshals
2x Austringers

I thought that since the Judge is the only model that has a WK of 5 other than LJ, I'll include him this time (despite his less than impressive performance in the games I've played so far).  That Left me with 4 SS in my cache, compared with 3SS in Ophelia's. My opponent used:

Ophelia Lacroix
3x Young Lacroix
Francois Lacroix
Pere Ravage
Rami Lacroix
Raphael Lacroix

Silence before the storm

The scenario was Slaughter and we had the Standard Deployment. I took Assassinate (Ophelia) and Bodyguard for LJ. My opponent picked Hold Out and Kill Protegee (the only one that wasn't announced).

My opponent won the priority flip in the first turn and quickly started putting the family into position.
Playing against very nicely painted minis added a lot to the enjoyment of the game
I moved my whole crew together with only one DM staying slightly behind. I realized that a frontal assault would be suicidal so I tried to time well the moment of coming from behind the cover. Keeping the Austringers alive was crucial as they're deadly against gremlins (+flips for dmg and wd). Ophelia sent Pere my way, hoping to blow him up as close to my crew as possible.

The action picked up from there quickly. First, much to my dismay, Rami made short work of one of my Austringers. This wasn't a good start at all but I paid back by taking care of Pere - DM wounded him and the Judge finally managed to make some impact by finishing him off. The same DM was killed a moment later by YL but managed to put him down thanks to his Slow to Die ability. After that the real slaughter began...

I decided to go for broke and moved LJ to the young Lacroix and dealt an attack from melee expert. He somehow survived but that wasn't the worst thing. I stupidly ended LJ's movement so that she was touching the opponent's base, forgetting that she has a reach of '2 with her greatsword.
Sometimes a small detail can lead to a big obstacle
Winning priority in the next turn was crucial. I flipped 13 and could start my punishment. I declared a charge against Ophelia (she was partly in cover but LJ's Blindfighter allows her to ignore LoS when declaring charges. My mistake from the previous turn resulted in not only wasting a solid 13 from hand but also burning a  SS. I managed to avoid a disengaging strike but a very high card and a precious SS were wasted. Having played with the same crew a few times I came to a conclusion that hiding LJ behind covers and stalking around makes no sense. She's meant for melee and should get into it whenever she has a good chance...

...even when the cards on hand look like these.
I cast Sword Style and managed to inflict a moderate damage on Ophelia, which wasn't good enough but with cards like these one can't hope for too much. Not only I didn't kill her but she also managed to use a Squeel! df trigger and moved '4 away. LJ tried to take out her frustration on Raphael by using her melee expert attack but he survived with one wd remaining. My action clearly made an impact but I knew it wasn't enough and braced myself for punishment which came moments later. Ophelia used "Oooo! A girl!" to move Raphael from the danger zone and together they started dealing in lead, making short work of LJ (have I mentioned lack of good cards  on hand?).

The Judge activates and starts "plan B"
Having failed at Assassination, I decided I'd try completing my other Scheme and moved the Judge forward. Seeing two Young Lacroix in front of him, I made one WK action and shot in the next. When that failed, I moved my remaining Austringer '4 forward and made one Raptor Strike against the wounded YL. Much to my dismay, nothing good came out of this and turn three ended.

Turn 4 started with Young Lacroix killing the Judge and the prospect of winning  suddenly started looking very remote. Not only my chances of reaching Ophelia's deployment zone were basically non-existent but also my crew was outnumbered and at this point models removed from play were worth more SS than the dead Gremlins.I thought that this had to be the end but I won the initiative flip in turn 5.

Luck was with my as I drew 4 very good cards (11,2X12 and one 13), which made it possible to make a solid Hunting Raptor attack against Ophelia. One that she didn't survive as she had no SS left. Raphael managed to heal 4 of his wounds and put himself in a position to attack the Austringer next turn.
At the same time, Rami unsuccessfully tried to kill the remaining DM. at ths point my opponent made a big mistake by moving Rami too close and the DM walked '4 forward, got him in sight and fired a deadly shot from his trusty Peacebringer (free Critical strike can be a good thing).

I lost the much needed priority in turn 6 but once again I was able to draw very good cards and the Austringer cheated fate successfully two times in a row. It was a promising start but I got rid of my best cards and as a result was unable to inflict damage on Raphael.

Bird's eye view on the final stage of the scrap
And that ended the game as my last flip was a 9, meaning we could start counting victory points. We both completed only one of our schemes but the total SS cost of models I killed was higher and I was victorious.

The game was a true Slaughter. We exchanged deadly blows turn by turn and most of the models that started the game ended up dead. It feels good to finally win a game but I have to admit it was very challenging as my opponent was very skilled.
Austringers are really strong against Gremling. An additional damage and wound flip against Gremlins is a huge advantage. If I hadn't lost one of them early on in the game I might have been able to do much more damage with their nasty Hunting Raptor strikes.
I'm beginning to get used to LJ crew as I feel that at this point I can take advantage of most of their skills and  remember about all the triggers. Still, I'm looking forward to playing with the Ortegas. It won't be long as I'm buying a crew later this week.
