My last GG2016 tournament

This has probably been my last Malifaux. GG2016 tournament. It took place at FGB in Warsaw in January 14th. It was a small local tourney.

To byłą mała lokalna impreza.

Board setup for game 1
1st Round

Flank Deployment
Strategy: Extraction
Schemes: Convict Labor, Exhaust Their ForcesLeave Your Mark, Search the TuinsOccupy Their Turf

In my first game I faced Misaki with a list full of hard hitting beatsticks (Izamu, Lone Swordsman, Shadow Emissary), supported by two Oiran. I chose to field Titania, Aeslin (for the anti-lure bubble), Barbaros and one Depleted (to stay put in the middle), Mysterious Effigy, the Claw, Widow Weaver, Primordial Magic.
I haven't used Aeslin before. She seems too weak to compete for the henchman spot on Titania's crew (especially her lack of armor is a bummer) so I normally leave her out. In this game she did really well and helped me keep everyone in the middle (at least before she died, which happened pretty much right after she got attacked). In the course of the game I lost Barbaros, Aeslin, and even Titania (I didn't control my hand too well and lost her after Misaki hit her Assassinate trigger). Despite that I managed to take down Lone Swordsman and prevent Izamu from doing anything significant (thanks to Titania's Behold my Glory Trigger, and a Paralyze from Widow Weaver). We run out of time (if we continued I would most likely have been completely tabled) and luckily for me at that point I was still leading in VPs thanks to Markers that allowed me to score for Search the Ruins. My opponent was inconsolable as I managed a 4-2 win in the end.
I was one of those games when the opponent wants to double check your every move, measure all the distances, and has a very serious attitude to the game. It's definitely not how I like to play but I can understand that people come from different gaming system backgrounds where such attitudes can sometimes be common...

Situation on the board after deployment
Titania's crew is moving closer to the centre

W trakcie gry straciłem Barbarosa, Aeslin, a w pewnym momencie nawet Titanię (nie pilnowałem dobrze ręki i zabrakło mi karty do uchronienia jej przed triggerem Misaki).

2nd Round

Standard Deployment
Strategy: Interference
Schemes: Convict Labor, Take Prisoner, Hunting Party, Set Up (Cassandra), Public Demonstration

Board for game 2

I took Titania again. Set Up is a great scheme for her. I also took Hunting Party and deployed Nekima far on the right side in hopes of catching some Scheme runners. I also took the Claw (I really like his ranged attack and his "lure" is really good too), Mysterious Effigy, Doppelganger, and Widow Weaver (who didn't really do much for me in this game). I faced a thematic Colette list filled with Showgirls and supported by Mechanical Rider.

First turn was all about moving in position for turn 2 and my opponent threw numerous Scheme Markers down. I quickly realized he had Convict Labor and moved Nekima forward on the right where she looked to start next turn with killing a lonely Performer.
My opponent won initiative in turn 2 and moved Cassandra far into my half of the board, killing the Pukeworm. I should have kept it further in the back as his main purpose is just to be there and give me a card to cycle at the beginning of each turn. His Ca attack can come in handy when there are Web Markers in place but in this game the opponent kept his forces spread out in the back. However, at that point I knew both of his Schemes and was able to plan limiting his options. Luckily for me, I had Set Up on Cassandra and was able to quickly throw down Scheme Markers around her. In the meanwhile Titania flew ahead on the left side and started dropping Scheme Markers, blocking Convict Labor on that side of the board. Nekima controlled the right side and (after becoming Queen's Champion) started easily picking off Mechanical Doves, blocking Convict Labor in her area.
The game ended 7-2 in my favor. My opponent was good sport and it was a very enjoyable game (though first turn seemed to take ages with so much careful positioning). Luck played a big part here as well as my second turn hand was very good, giving me a solid backup. This victory meant that I was going to face a Guild player for the top spot in the tournament.

A view from the other side of the table

Znowu zdecydowałem się na Titanię. Set Up to idealny Scheme dla niej.
Cassandra scores for team Colette but finds herself in a tight spot
Przeciwnik wygrał inicjatywę w 2 turze i szybko przesunął Cassandrę do przodu, zabijając mi Rzygorobala.

My hand for turn 2, Dreamer would approve!

3rd Round

Corner Deployment

Strategy: Headhunter
Schemes: Convict Labor, Show of Force, Leave Your Mark, Public Demonstration, A Quick Murder

I finally got to test these

I knew that I was going to face Guild so I expected powerful gunfire line. I decided to try Zoraida and run her with Will-o-wisps for the first time. I added McTavish, Doppelganger, Iggy, Lilitu, and one Silurid. I faced Perdita with Francisco, Samael (he was an obvious choice for A Quick Murder), Abuela, Enslaved Nephilim, and two Wardens. I had upgrades on McTavish, Lilitu, and Doppelganger so I took Show of Force.

My deployment

In retrospect, it wasn't a good choice as the middle of the board was almost completely empty and it was a great shooting range for the Guild. I probably would have scored a point or two for Leave Your Mark if I'd taken a second Silurid instead of Lilitu or Iggy.
The game was really intense and we were going point for point. I managed to kill Samael with McTavish but lost him a moment later. The problem with 'Dita is that you can't really hide from her. She's got so much mobility and she ignores cover, which means that if she wants something dead, she will most likely have it her way. I thought that my best bet was to make sure I get my 3VP before my opponent does the same.
During the course of the game I made another big mistake which allowed my opponent to realize what my second scheme was. In another difficult situation I lept forward with my Silurid to pick up a head, knowing very well that I was going to lose it and his head will be picked by opponent in turn. I thought that a point for point is still better than 1VP for the opponent and 0 for me.
I managed to Hem Francisco with Voodoo doll and I had very good hand with two high tomes,. It meant that I'd be able to move with Doppelganger to the center (or lure Fran close with Lilitu to have Fran's head nearby) and kill the henchman, staying close enough to the centre to score for Show of Force.  I didn't get to try it as the tournament ended at that point with my 6-7 loss.
It was a really great, exciting game and I think we both played it really well and made (mosty) good decisions. In the end I lost and was second overall, but I felt satisfied in the end. My opponent had a relaxed attitude, we cracked a few jokes every now and then and didn't waste time reading each other's unit cards or double measuring everything. This is how Malifaux should  be played!
Shooting range in the centre

Miałem upgrady na McTavishu, Lilitu, i Doppelgangerze, wiec wybrałem Show of Force.

At this point the game finished

Good game and great sportsmanship

My first Wyrd diploma for being in top 3 !

And a few pics of my minis. I'd also like to thank the ringer who was doing a very good job during the whole event and he also took most of the pictures you can see in this post.

  2. Klimat figurek raczej ni mój, jednak samo malowanie budzi podziw. Bardzo ładne stoły i gratuluję wyniku.
