Fight Night - Malifaux 50ss tournament

Last Saturday I played in my second Malifaux tournament. Once again, it took place at Vanaheim.pl store in Kraków. This time 12 people showed up, which is twice the number that competed in the previous one. Strats and schemes were known ahead of time, so I was able to prepare my lists accordingly. I chose to run Dreamer in all games (despite the new Assassinate scheme in pool for round one).

Round I
Deployment: Standard Deployment
Strategy: Interference
Schemes:
Convict Labor, Hunting Party, Show of Force, Neutralize the LeaderDetonate the charges

I took:
Dreamer 7ss cache
+ Dreams of Pain
+ On Wings of Darkness
+ Aether connection
Teddy
+ Retribution's Eye
Doppelganger
+ Mimic's Blessing
Coppelius
+ On Dreaming Wings
Waldgeist
2 Daydreams

In this game I faced the local Henchman and his Misaki. He also took Sensei Yu, 2 Katanaka Snipers (ouch, that's a tough combination to play against), Tengu, Shadow Effigy, and Sidir. I realized I'd need some minions/peons so I had to make sure there were some Daydreams around my Enforcers. The table was set up so that the Snipers had a clear view on most of it and my movement was very limited. I think it played an important part in the final outcome.
Turn one consisted of moving minis into position. I summoned the twins and one Daydream and lowered Waking by 1. I placed Doppelganger in position further ahead in hopes of luring Misaki into combat and dropping a scheme next to her for Detonate the Charges. I succeeded in getting her to move there, but was had been shot at before that happened and... flipped a Black Joker for Df and got 4 Wds on Doppelganger. Anyway, I put Teddy and Coppelius close to make sure they can deal with her next turn. I was pretty confident I could secure Initiative, after all I hired Doppelganger just for that purpose and I had a Red Joker in hand.
Turn two started with my opponent flipping... a Red Joker for Initiative. I really needed to start that turn so I quickly cheated my Joker in. We flipped again, tied, flipped again and I lost (despite burning a soulstone). It was w turning point as Misaki activated, burned an upgrade that made her harder to hit and quickly killed Doppelganger and Coppelius. These were tough loses and I knew that catching up now would be an uphill battle. I only managed to squeeze 3 VP from Detonate the charges under these circumstances after Coppelius got summoned again and placed Scheme Marker for the scheme (one of the others was placed by... Teddy).
I had hard time maneuvering my models and keeping them hidden from snipers. This limited my options. I managed to heal the twins up but they didn't do much, staying behind cover most of the time. I took Aether Connection upgrade as I thought Dreamer might be targeted often in the game. Looking back at the game, Otherworldly would have been a much better choice for the summoning version of Dreamer. Choosing Neutralize the leader was risky and proved next to impossible against a master who was able to generate negative flips for Df. I probably would have been better off with Hunting Party.
The final score was Ten Thunders 6 - 3 Neverborn. Despite the loss, I enjoyed the game a lot. My opponent was a great guy, there were no negative emotions, and we even swapped some fun 'Faux stories as we played. I also had a chance to clarify some questions I had about rules with an experienced player.

Snipers and Sensei Yu in position

Dreamer's summoning corner
Przywołałem bliźnięta i 1 Daydreama.
Teddy.
Miałem duże problemy z manewrowaniem modelami i trzymaniem ich poza zasięgiem snajperów. To mocno ograniczało moje opcje.

Round II
Deployment: Flank Deployment
Strategy: Headhunter
Schemes:
Convict Labor, Leave Your Mark, Exhaust Their Forces, Covert BreakthroughFrame For Murder

I took:
Dreamer 7ss cache
+ Restless Dreams
+ Tantrum
+ On Wings of Darkness
Widow Weaver
Teddy
+ Retribution's Eye
Coppelius
+ On Dreaming Wings
+ Insidious Madness
+ Insidious Madness
Daydream

My opponent Chose Seamus, Copycat Killer, Sybelle, 2 Flesh Constructs, 2 Canine Remains, 2 Belles. I don't remember all the  upgrades...

I had a solid plan for this one before the game started. Madnesses and Coppelius were to deal with Breakthrough, while Teddy (together with Chompy) was to keep as many models tied in Melee in one place as possible. The plan was also to get Teddy killed before or on turn 3, preferably by Seamus or Sybelle. I was lucky as Wp was the weakest point of my opponent's crew and using Widow's Web markers made passing Terrifying tests a big challenge for Ressers and effectively drained my opponent's hand throughout the whole game.
Turn one started with Dreamer shooting Canine Remains twice and killing it. Teddy hit the other dog once and tied it in Ml. Seamus backalley'd across the board to kill (together with Copycat Killer) one of my Madnesses. I had a really bad hand in this turn, stoned for three cards, and drew two 1s and one 2. I decided to keep the worst cards in hand and discarded them at the beginning of turn two. I kept only the Black Joker.
It worked quite well as I was able to build a solid hand for the next turn (although I kept stoning for cards for the rest of the game). Flesh Constructs with their low Wp proved completely ineffective here but I suspected that one of them might be the "sucker" so I didn't try very hard to kill them. Teddy quickly dealt with the other wounded doggy, getting rid of my opponent's Scheme runners.
In turn 3 I charged Teddy into a group of models (including Seamus, Copycat killer, one Flesh Construct and a Belle). He died a moment later but forced Sybelle to waste two precious soulstones to do that, securing me three VP along the way. I was very lucky with my flips in this game. I drew 10 or higher for pretty much all of Chompy's attacks. He is a true melee beast. The ability to generate 6 attacks each turn is just ridiculous and he proved extremely efficient.
In the end it was Neverborn 10 - 3 Ressurectionists. I was able to pick up the head marker every turn thanks to pushes from Daydreams. Those little guys make this crew so much faster! I was also able to tie enough of my opponent's models in Chompy's Ml range to prevent him from scoring more VPs for Covert Breakthrough. I also have to admit that my opponent had awful flips for the most part and his hand didn't offer much help. Despite that he didn't take the game too seriously and we were both able to enjoy playing Malifaux in good atmosphere. Also, that was the best painted crew I've ever played against. All of the models in my opponent's crew were painted to a high standard and it really improved the whole experience.

Turn one

Keeping it tight in the center

Teddy raz uderzył drugiego pieska i pozostał w zwarciu. Seamus użył umiejętności Back Alley i, na spółkę z Copycat Killer, zastrzelił jedną z moich Madness.
To prawdziwa maszyna do walki wręcz.

Round III
Deployment: Corner Deployment
Strategy: Squatter's Rights
Schemes:
Convict Labor, Take Prisoner, Hunting PartyA Quick Murder, Occupy Their Turf

I took:
Dreamer 7ss cache
+ Tantrum
+ Restless Dreams
+ On Wings of Darkness
Widow Weaver
Teddy
+ On Dreaming Wings
Doppelganger
Waldgeist x2
Daydream

I've faced my opponent before when he declared Gremlins and got to experience Ulix and his pigs in action. This time he chose Somer, Lenny, Pigapult, Old Cranky, Taxidermist, and a ton of Bayou Gremlins (more of them were summoned later). Seeing the green horde, bunched up in the corner was a disheartening sight.
My plan was simple - charge my beatsticks in, kill Lenny and then hope I can score more VPs for Hunting Party and maybe even a point or two for Squatter's Rights. So this time I chose no schemes relying on dropping markers but I realized that Gremlins were going to outactivate me anyway so they'd have an advantage here and there was little I could do to prevent that.
My opponent started by moving a few Gremlins around, summoning more with Somer, and then when I was outactivated, he catapulted some more onto the Squat Markers, which were taken by them soon afterwards. I pushed my flying Teddy forward, summoned three times with Dreamer and left him on Waking 3. I also positioned Teddy in place, ready for attack in next turn.
I won initiative in turn 2 (which is something that you can almost take for granted if you have a Doppelganger in your crew), moved Teddy forward with Gobble you Up,  and then flurried onto Lenny. The big Gremlin was left on one wound. Next I moved Dreamer three times for a total of 21 inches, used his extra Sh attack from Ranged expert, and summoned Chompy within 6'. At this point I had two Terrifying beatsticks in the middle of green mass, which is right where I wanted and needed them, especially Chompy with Melee master who was still to activate. Unfortunately, I flipped Black Joker on my next Df flip and Somer cheated in a Red Joker for damage. I tried to burn a soulstone for prevention but got only 1 point off and Chompy went down, leaving unprotected Dreamer far away from his friendly Nightmares. It was a high risk high reward move which could have won me the game but that Black Joker meant I was in a tight spot.
Dreamer did his best to survive and burnt three soulstones for damage prevention but eventually went down soon afterwards. My only hope was Widow Weaver. She got a push from a Daydream and shot Lenny (her Ca, non-projectile attack is really useful), finally killing him and earning me much needed 3 VPs.
I wasn't really able to do as much as after that lack of Dreamer limited my options. I managed to get three more points (two for strat and one for Hunting Party). My opponent easily scored three for Occupy Their Turf and kept his other scheme hidden. I realized it was Take Prisoner but wasn't sure on which of my models. I suspected he chose one of my Waldgeists as they're slow and difficult to take down anyway. I used Teddy to secure Squat Marker and in doing so prevented my opponent from scoring for Strategy in the last turn. A moment later Gremlins moved in and he announced Take Prisoner. The final result was Neverborn 6 - 8 Gremlins. It was a very dynamic game and I knew I had to play aggressively if I wanted to achieve anything. That Black Joker on Df flip and early loss of Master were really hard for me and I struggled to do anything. Six VPs are not that bad, but it could have been much better.

Chompy WAS here

Widok ściśniętej w rogu zielonej hordy odbierał trochę serce do gry.
Ustawiłem tez Miśka w pozycji gotowości do ataku w następnej turze.
Mój przeciwnik bez większych problemów zdobył 3 punkty za Occupy their Turf i trzymał w tajemnicy swoją drugą intrygę. Chwilę później osaczyły go Gremliny i druga intryga - Take Prisoner, została ujawniona. Ten nieszczęsny Czarny Joker na Df i szybka strata Mastera mocno skomplikowały moją sytuację i musiałem mocno kombinować, żeby zdobyć jakieś VP.

Overall, it was a very enjoyable tournament. I played against Ressers and Somer for the first time and learnt a bit about these masters. I regret only one thing - I didn't try anything new and I think I should have tried a different model or two. I also need to work on being better prepared for plan B. Malifaux is a very dynamic game and you have to be prepared that even in what looks like safe situation things can quickly go south.

  1. Nice read, thanks for sharing!

Great to see the tournament turn out with double the players of last tournament. That's always a good thing! Dreamer can be a challenge to master, but has lots of layers and options making him a strong choice. I feel you could try to play less on a lucky flip (there's two games where you say a (un)lucky flip changed the outcome). If you ever played Bloodbowl it's much the same: try to achieve as much as possible without having to rely on luck (how small the chance is...).

My limited experience versus Dreamer, which was Summoner version, was that he just hanged back summoning tons of stuff. I had to come to him, through all those nasty summons. I lost that game, underestimating the movementpossibilities the crew had; that's indeed very strong as you say!

Up to next tournament, I will be waiting for the report :)

    1. Thanks for an interesting comment. I agree with what you've written - always having a plan B is something I need to work on. Making fewer risky moves is another. With new GG schemes it's harder to keep Dreamer's summoning high when Neutralize the Leader is in the pool. Scion of Black Blood could potentially remove Waking condition from him but the cost seems too high.
