Malifaux Starter Set - a review

I've finally received my Gencon order. The first box that I immediately checked out was the newly released 2-player starter set. It contains:

- 2 x Crews (8 models) 

- 8 Stat Cards, 2 Upgrade Cards, 2 Quick Reference Cards 

- Quick Start Booklet 

- Free Digital Rules Manual 

- 2 Fate Decks 

- 2 Measuring Tapes

W końcu dotarło do mnie moje genconowe zamówienie. Pierwszą rzeczą, którą od razu obczaiłem był nowo wydany starter dla 2 graczy. Pudełko zawiera:

- 2ekipy (8 modeli) 

- 8 kart ze statystykami, 2 karty z Upgradami, 2 karty typu Quick Reference  

- Mała książka wprowadzająca do mechaniki Malifaux 

- Darmowe zasady w wersji cyfrowej 

- 2 talie kart 

- 2 taśmy

Let's start with the Quick Start Booklet. It's a nice introduction into Malifaux as it guides new players through the rules. There are 5 encounters described in it, and as they increase in size and complexity, all the intricacies and interactions of the game should become easier to comprehend.
There is also some fluff in the form of notes written by Dr Grimwell and they present him as a twisted figure. At the end of the booklet there is also a link to free digital rules manual. All you need to do is fill in an online form and upload a proof of purchase of the starter set. At the moment of writing this review I still haven't received my copy but I submitted the form online during the weekend so I'll just have to wait a little longer.

I got a link and downloaded my free digital copy of rules from www.drivethrurpg.com/ It's the same thing as the mini rulebook - 100% rules, no fluff. Really great thing to have on your mobile device as you won't need to have the book with you.

Zacznijmy od mini podręcznika z szybkimi zasadami do systemu. To przystępne wprowadzenie do Malifaux i pokazanie podstawowych zasad. W środku znajdziecie opis pięciu starć. Każde kolejne jest coraz bardziej złożone i stopniowo pozwala ogarnąć zasady gry. Jest też trochę fluffu w formie notatek napisanych przez Dr Grimwella (które pokazują go jako mocno pokręconą osobę). Na końcu znajdziecie link do uzyskania darmowych zasad w wersji cyfrowej. Wystarczy tylko uzupełnić formularz online i załadować zdjęcie stanowiące dowód zakupu startera. W momencie pisania recenzji nie otrzymałem jeszcze mojej kopii, ale zgłoszenie wypełniłem w weekend więc trzeba będzie chwilę poczekać.

Dostałem link i ściągnąłem moją darmową cyfrową kopię zasad z www.drivethrurpg.com/ To jest to samo co mini podręcznik - 100% zasad, bez fluffu. Naprzwdę przydatna rzecz, bo można to mieć na komórce/tablecie i nie trzeba nosić ze sobą podręcznika.

There are also two measuring tapes. They definitely are an improvement compared to the older versions. I don't know if they were sold officially - I got mine old tapes as an extra to one of my Gencon orders. The new ones are bigger and the tape is made of softer material, which should make all the in-game measurements much easier.

W pudełku znajdują się również dwie taśmy. Wyglądają zdecydowanie lepiej niż starsze wersje. Nie wiem czy były one w ogóle oficjalnie w sprzedaży  -ja dostałem je jako bonus do jednego z moich genconowych zamówień. Nowe są większe i taśma jest zrobiona z bardziej miękkiego mateiału, co powinno znacznie ułatwić wszystkie pomiary w grze.

The two decks are nicely designed. The suits are easily recognizable and the severes feature some of the main characters from the factions. Jokers got a new look too.

I was curious which type of material Wyrd would use here - plastic or paper. While it's definitely not plastic, the cards feel thinner and at the same time a bit more solid than the old ones.

Nowe karty są ładnie zaprojektowane. Łatwo jest rozpoznać kolory, a wysokie karty mają grafiki z postaciami odgrywającymi ważne role w danej frakcji. Jokery też dostały zupełnie nowe wersje.

Ciekawiło mnie, którą wersję materiału Wyrd użyje przy nowych kartach - plastiku czy papieru. Na pewno nie jest o plastik, ale karty sprawiają wrażenie cieńszych, a zarazem bardziej wytrzymałych niż stare wersje.

 

And last but definitely not least - the miniatures. There are eight of them in total, 4 Guild and 4 Neverborn. As far as stats go, they all have the mercenary characteristic, so they can be hired by any crew.  I play these two factions and can easily see how these will fit in into some of my crews.Truth be told, I bought the set just to get them as they aren't probably going to be available separately.
One thing might be misleading to new players. The Guild models are all melee-oriented, while the Neverborn have two models that can deal damage from distance. One can get a wrong idea of how these factions work in Malifaux.

I na sam koniec - figurki. Jest ich w sumie 8 - 4 do Gildii i 4 do Neverborn. Jeśli chodzi o statystyki - wszystkie postacie mają cechę"mercenary", a więc mogą być najęte przez wszystkie ekipy. Gram obiema frakcjami, więc powinienem łatwo znaleźć dla nich miejsce. Nie ukrywam, że to ze względu na nie kupiłem cały set - najprawdopodobniej nie będą później dostępne w sprzedaży osobno.
Jedna rzecz może wprowadzić początkujących graczy w błąd. Modele Gildii są nastawione na walkę wręcz, podczas gdy Neverborn mają 2 jednostki strzelające. Łatwo można wyrobić sobie nieprawdziwą opinię na temat tego, jak działają te frakcje w praktyce.

The quality of these minis is very good. It's not spectacular (comparing to minis such as new Necropunks or any of the newly released crews). However, they are designed to be put together easily and without much effort. It's a starter set after all so it makes sense to make things easier for new players. I have to admit, though, that all the minis from the set were very easy to assemble and I won't need much Green Stuff on them. The only change I made was the position of Scion of Black Blood - I didn't really like the original taunting pose so I lowered his head a little.

Jakość tych figurek jest bardzo dobra. Nie jest to może rewelacja (porównując n. z nowymi Necopunkami czy też z jakąkolwiek nową wydaną ekipą). Warto jednak pamiętać, że ideą tego boxa jest dostęp do figurek, które można łatwo złożyć. W końcu to zestaw startowy, więc czemu nie ułatwić życia początkującym graczom? Mimo to i tak muszę przyznać, że wszystkie figurki z zestawu były bardzo łatwe do złożenia i nawet nie będę musiał się przy nich napracować z Green Stuffem. Jedyna zmiana jaką zrobiłem to pozycja głowy Scion of Black Blood - nie podobała mi się wyzywająca poza, wiec lekko obniżyłem głowę.

To summarize, the set is good value for money, especially if you're just beginning your Malifaux experience. If not, you can still find enough cool stuff inside to justify spending $65 on it.

Podsumowując, zestaw wypada bardzo dobrze w relacji cena-zawartość, zwłaszcza dla tych, którzy dopiero zaczynają się interesować Malifaux. Pozostali gracze i tak powinni znaleźć w nim wystarczająco dużo ciekawej zawartości, żeby wydać te $65.
