Malifaux gaming mat - a review

The first question you might want to ask is why use mats for playing Malifaux in the first place? Well, the answer is simple. Malifaux uses a 3x3 feet board (or 36x36 inch if you prefer). It's usually the first thing you consider when setting up for the game. You can either mark the corners of that square with pieces of terrain or glue tape to the board to clearly mark that space (you can see both of these solutions in the pictures below). Now if you own a special gaming mat, the whole thing becomes much easier - you just spread it on the table and you're good to go. Can it get any easier? Yes, it can, as long as the mat you're using has all the deployment zones included.

Pierwsze pytanie jakie się nasuwa to "po co w ogóle używać mat do grania w Malifaux?". Cóż, odpowiedź jest prosta. Pole gry do Malifaux to kwadrat o wymiarach 3x3 stopy (lub 36x36 cali). To w większości przypadków pierwsza rzecz, którą bierze się pod uwagę kiedy zaczyna się rozgrywkę. Można po prostu wyznaczyć ten obszar na stole ustawiając elementy terenu na krawędziach, lub też użyć taśmy i obramować na stole teraz do gry (oba rozwiązania widać na poniższych zdjęciach). Jednak posiadanie specjalnej maty do gry znacznie ułatwia sprawę - wystarczy rozwinąć ją na stole i można zaczynać grę. Czy można to jeszcze bardziej uprościć? Zdecydowanie tak, pod warunkiem, że mata ma oznaczone wszystkie strefy rozstawienia.

Such gaming mats can be bought in several online stores and there are quite a few companies producing them. Unfortunately (at least from my, European perspective), they are mostly located in the US. It makes them rather expensive with high shipping costs and tax fees. That's why I started looking for alternatives on this side of the Atlantic Ocean.  I came across Playmats.eu who were kind enough to send me their latest product for review.

Takie maty można kupić w kilku sklepach online i pojawiło się już nawet kilka firm, które mają je w ofercie. Niestety (przynajmniej z mojej, europejskiej perspektywy), znajdują się one głównie w Stanach Zjednoczonych. To znacznie zwiększa koszty (droga przesyłka i opłata za cło). Dlatego też zacząłem szukać alternatyw po tej stronie Atlantyku. Tak trawiłem na Playmaty.pl. Właściciele byli na tyle uprzejmi, że przesłali mi ich najnowszy produkt do recenzji. 

I received two versions, the first is a Black-Flat (according to the description from the store, it is produced from the highest quality double layered polyester material) and the other is a thicker Foam mat. You can notice the difference between them at first glance. The colors on the black-flat are more saturated and glossy while the latter one is a matt one and the colors are toned down. It's hard for me to say which one looks better, I probably like the foam one a little more as it seems a bit more realistic at first glance. But then it just boils down to personal preferences. Both mats have a solid feel to them and are resistant to scratches and don't absorb liquids (I "managed to" spill some hot tea on them and there was no trace of it later on).

One difference that you can't miss is that the grids are slightly better visible on the first one and barely visible on the Foam mat. Obviously, in both cases they are noticeable only upon closer inspection and once you look more carefully, you'll be able to find them without any problems. Both versions of the mat roll out nicely and the corners stay flat on the surface.

Dostałem dwie wersje, Black-Flat (według opisu na stronie wyprodukowana z najwyższej jakości poliestru), oraz grubszą matę piankową. Różnice między nimi widać już na pierwszy rzut oka. Kolory na macie typu Black-Flat są bardziej żywe i nasycone, a mata piankowa ma bardziej stonowane barwy i jest matowa. Ciężko mi powiedzieć która bardziej mi się podoba, ale chyba wskazałbym na piankową, ponieważ sprawia wrażenie nieco bardziej realistycznej. Ale to już kwestia gustu. Obie maty są solidnie wykonane, są również odporne na zadrapania i nie wsiąkają w nie płyny ("udało mi się" rozlać na nie trochę gorącej herbaty i nie został po niej nawet ślad).

Zauważalną różnica jest to, że wszystkie linie są nieco lepiej widoczne na pierwszej macie i prawie niewidoczne na piankowej. W obu przypadkach są oczywiście widoczne i po bliższym przyjrzeniu się nie będzie problemu z ich zauważeniem.  Obie wersje bardzo dobrze rozwijają się na stole i świetnie trzymają się powierzchni.

The mat is swamp-themed. As you can see in the pictures, the print is diversified. The swamp covers the main part but there are also some cobblestone paths along with some larger rocks. Green and brown work together really well and the shades of these colors are nicely spread over the mat. I also really like the elements of contrast here - a small patch of yellowish sand and a touch of blue fit in perfectly with the rest of the print.  

I noticed that with some gaming mats, the creators try really hard to add some special effects or 3D objects, which don't necessarily look that great on a flat surface of the mat. As I mentioned earlier, there are some bigger stones here but they don't break the coherent look of the mat and are match the theme perfectly.

Motyw przewodni maty to bagno. Jak widzicie na zdjęciach, nadruk jest bardzo zróżnicowany. Bagno zajmuje większą część, ale znajdują się tam też brukowane ścieżki i trochę większych kamieni. Zieleń i brąz bardzo dobrze do siebie pasują, a różne odcienie tych kolorów są ładnie rozłożone na całości. Podobają mi się również elementy wprowadzające kontrast - plama żółtawego piasku czy też mały dodatek niebieskiego świetnie pasują do reszty nadruku.

Zauważyłem, że przy niektórych matach twórcy starają się na siłę wcisnąć specjalne efekty czy też obiekty 3D, co niekoniecznie wygląda dobrze na płaskiej powierzchni maty. Tak jak wspomniałem wcześniej, można znaleźć tutaj kilka większych kamieni, ale nie rozbija to spójnego wyglądu i pasuje idealnie do motywu przewodniego.

The grid lines are definitely the best thing here. When it comes to playing Malifaux, setting up crews at the beginning of encounter can take a while, especially with corner and flank deployment. Precise measuring the areas in which each player places its models at the start of the game gets tricky then, especially with plenty of terrain (which is usually the case with games of Malifaux).

I've seen several projects and many pictures online with Malifaux gaming mats that have deployment zones incorporated into the print. It doesn't always look great as it's really hard to strike a balance between functionality and good appearance. The designers at playmats.eu have dealt with it really well. All the lines look as if they were slightly moss-covered and blend in perfectly with the rest of the mat. They don't detract from the design on the mat when you look at it from the top but are easily recognizable upon closer inspection. They are extremely helpful with deploying crews but they also work really well for schemes and strategies. The center of the board and all the lines going through it are also clearly marked..

Strefy rozstawienia to zdecydowanie najlepsza rzecz na tej macie. Przy grze w Malifaux, rozstawianie ekip na początku starcia potrafi zająć sporo czasu, zwłaszcza przy opcji narożnej lub na flankach. Dokładne mierzenie obszarów, w których każdy z graczy rozstawia modela na początku gry staje się wtedy mocno utrudnione, szczególnie przy dużej ilości terenów (co jest zazwyczaj normą w Malifaux).  

Widziałem kilka projektów i sporo zdjęć mat do Malifaux, które mają włączone w wydruk strefy rozstawienia. Nie zawsze wyglądają dobrze. Naprawdę ciężko jest osiągnąć balans pomiędzy funkcjonalnością i dobrym wyglądem. Ekipie playmaty.pl udało się znaleźć idealny kompromis. Wszystkie linie wyglądają na lekko omszałe i bardzo ładnie zlewają się z resztą nadruku na macie. Nie gryzą się z designem maty kiedy patrzy się na całość z góry i są łatwe do zauważenia po bliższym przyjrzeniu się powierzchni. Są bardzo pomocne przy rozstawianiu ekip ale też świetnie pomagają przy schematach i strategiach. Środek maty i wszystkie linie, które przez niego przechodzą są również dobrze oznaczone.

I can honestly recommend the mat to anyone who likes the game. It's a great product, printed in high resolution and really well designed. It makes all the in game measurements fast and easy and makes playing Malifaux an even better experience.
